Natural Shampoo Bar-Day 8, I'm still not convinced....

I'm still not convinced that I like going without my usual conditioner.  -Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the idea of forgoing the nasty chemicals and potentially carcinogenic ingredients, but boy do I miss that "slip" when I'm blow-drying!

Last night I used a bit of Aloe Butter as a conditioner -rinsed it out as best I could, and left the "un-rinsable" in overnight.  Washed with my "Zesty Lemon" this a.m.  and cut the % of vinegar back once again....probably down to 10% or so now.

My hair feels different without the conditioner residue, I'm convinced that it is healthier for me to use a 100% Natural Soap / Shampoo Bar...but what about my hair?  I don't know, what do you all think ?  Comments? Share?

Oh, and "YIPPEE!" I've reached the 100 Followers mark....to celebrate (and get some comments out of my shy friends out there in Cyberland) I'm going to do a GIVEAWAY!  "Yippee" again!  Hmmmm.....let's see.....oh, I don't know......how about THREE BARS of Heirloom Natural Soap?  You pick from my in-stock varieties?  Sound good?  Well, let's say this...you get 1 entry for each one of these that you do:

I agree, I'm still not totally in love with my hair. Why do others have such great results?? Ever wonder what you're doing wrong?? Is it my hair? Is it my shampoo bar? Ha - just got your comment on MY post. LOL! Off to go answer it...

I've looked for "Natural Conditioner Recipes", but they all seem to be the "Mix 2 egg yolks with a mashed avocado..." -type.

(I'm not knocking th, at type of treatment -I used to put Humectress on my head and wrap it in saran wrap! It's a wonder they didn't call the authorities! LOL! This was before having a child and being "Mom" -I just don't take the time for that now.

I would love to know if anyone has a proven recipe that they would be willing to share...

Shampoo bars do make my hair feel different from commercial shampoo. It has never felt the same but I am used to the way it feels. It is very soft and wonderful, but a little puffy and flyaway if I don't straighten it. When I straighten it, it looks as good as it did with commercial shampoo. That gorgeous slip that you get from commercial shampoo & conditioner(I think from Silicon?), I don't think you can ever get from a shampoo bar. I am just used to brushing through difficult hair now. But I love the way my hair feels. Soft. I love the way the scalp feels, SO MUCH better. For conditioner, I simply use a blend of hair loving oil and a little EO. Right now I think it is a little Argan, and a little Jojoba. I put 1 small DAB on, rub it into my hands, then spread lightly over my hair. Hope you guys get loving your hair! But if you don't that is probably okay too. Different shampoo bars may make a difference. My first one was a DISASTER. xoxo Jen

Jen's right: the 'slip' is from that nasty silicon they put into commercial shampoos and conditioners. Real bad stuff, real bad. Jen's right again when she says that no everyone will take to ho'made shampoo bars. I so like the idea of them and that I know what I'm cleaning my hair with, but I also like that they give extra 'bounce' to my wavy/curly/dyed hair. I forgo the vinegar rinse mostly and just work a dab of my favorite (silicon free) conditioner through my hair, hardly leave it on and rinse. If I don't use that conditioner I can't comb through my hair and it turns all dreadlocks pretty fast. I don't use any styling products and really don't mess about with my hair much..more like a wash and air dry kinda gal. You know, even if you don't take to shampoo bars, it's good to have them in your repertoire, because there are customers out there who love them :)

My hair doesn't take to shampoo bars either. I tried bar soap, natural liquid soap and specific shampoo bars. My hair likes none of them. It becomes frizzy and impossible to brush. So I can't help. I know the slip comes from silicones, but they aren't necessarily bad, why should they be? But they do build up in the hair and some conditioners really do not agree with my hair either and I get a nasty silicone build-up (lank, greasy hair).

Nasty silicone build-up is the word. They coat your hair and your scalp, mimicking healthily hair when in fact their sealing quality allows no nutrients to penetrate your hair shaft anymore. Basically they interfere with your hair's healthy life, turning it brittle over time. The only way to wash that stuff out is with a deep cleansing shampoo. Silicones are also responsible for allergies and dandruff, and even if they make your hair look nicer they don't make your hair healthier in any way

Thanks Ladies, for keeping me focused on WHY I am changing to a natural shampoo bar!

You've reminded me why it's worth doing. I think my hair LOOKS fine using the "soap" (weird, huh?)

-so Soap Sister shall forge ahead "Da-da-da-Daaa!" "For the hair!"..."FOR THE HAIR!!!" :)

Bec: From the picture (above) I'd say your hair looks healthy and pretty! However, I totally "get" what you are saying about the "slip" and smooth feeling . . . not sure I'm ready to give up my commercial shampoos & conditioners YET. I think it is possible to get there (I DO make my own laundry detergent!), just might take some time. : ) Keep us posted on what you do for conditioner!

I made my shampoo bars this weekend. I am excited/nervous to try them out. Your hair looks great in the picture. I think I may find a silicon free conditioner to use. I don't usually put much in my hair either, but I do have hair that has the tendency to frizz so I am very hesitant to stop using conditioner all together. I am hoping the shampoo bar will take care of the problems I have with my scalp too.

Congratulations at meeting the 100 mark!! Yea for you!!! :)

I have never tried a shampoo bar, but it would be very interesting. I have very thin hair, and my hair seems to get really oily by the end of the day causing me to have to wash it every day. I bet using the natural shampoo is good for your hair and skin, but I do love that slip feeling after using conditioner as well!

Also, liked your facebook page, friended you, and am now following you via twitter @caitlinabs!

I think your hair hair looks great, and very-very soft.
I've never tried shampoo bars. As I think about it, I'm not really conscious what I use for my hair... :(
I'll check my conditioners now...
Congrats on the great NRs! :)
I liked your page, but no idea how to be your friend. Though 2 chances are good enough for me :)

Your hair looks so nice and shiny in the photo. I'm not a shampoo expert but can't wait to start experimenting. This is my comment to be entered in the draw.
