Redneck Soaping Part 2

After dazzling all of my sophisticated soaping friends with my Redneck Soap molds yesterday (and yes, I love 'em),  I thought I would do a follow-up to show you what nice bars result from said molds.  These soaps are full-size bars at approx. 4.6 oz. each and 3.5 inches across.

So, here they are:

"BubbleHead" Shampoo Bar in Rosemary-Mint

My customers love the shape (I used these molds for many of my Christmas Soaps), and I love how the word "REUSABLE" gets imprinted onto each bar from the mold!  Perhaps you have to be a redneck to be amused by this detail -but of course I can't tell for sure! ;)

Oh, and "Thanks Mom" -keep eatin' that KFC coleslaw! -xoxo Beck

Natural Acne Soap

After receiving numerous requests for "Acne Soap" -I've finally gotten off my duff and into the soap lab.

The resulting natural acne soap is designed to clean skin gently, yet thoroughly (3 types of clay should really help draw impurities from the skin without over-drying) and leave skin soft, smooth & lightly moisturized (accomplished with Extra Virgin Olive Oil as the sole superfatting additive).

A blend of Lavender & Petitgrain essential oils were added for their anti-bacterial & anti-inflammatory properties.

Here's what I ended up with:

Update on "Vanilla-Pumpkin Pie" Natural Soap & a "newbie"...

I thought I would post a picture of the Natural Soap "Vanilla-Pumpkin Pie" now that it has been cut into slices:

"Vanilla-Pumpkin Pie" Natural Soap

As usual, I've discovered one thing to "tweak" on my next batch.  I'll change
where I put the "cream".  If I put it around the perimeter, so that customers who buy the whole pie can vary the size of the slices without worrying about whether or not the dollop of "cream" will end up centered.

Speaking of "next batch", here's the photo of  "Lemon Pie" Natural Soap, which is probably gelling about now:

See what I mean about the cream around the perimeter?  I likes it! ;)
I'll post pics tomorrow after cutting.  Happy soaping everyone!

3. "Mr. Sensitive" -extra mild and moisturizing for sensitive skin/faces

For some reason I really liked the way the soaps photographed together.  So I had to click a few more shots yesterday when the sky was overcast...

"From Russia with Love" Natural Soap...

I received my package of Russian clay a while back, (I love the boxes that it comes it -beautiful full-color soap-type boxes -and I can't read a word on them!)

I've  been percolating with ideas for a new soap ever since.  What to combine it with to make a "flavor" befitting it's Siberian origins?

I wanted it to be gentle and moisturizing, of course.....but what comes to mind when one thinks of Siberia??  COLD!  Winter!  White fur-trimmed hoods....Dr. Zhivago....Omar Sharif....slap! slap! Becky snap out of it!  Ahem, sorry -I got a bit carried away there, but you get my drift! At least that's what comes to my mind...

So what I came up with for scent is a combination of Peppermint-Eucalyptus-Lavender, and it smells REALLY cool, fresh and well, Siberian to me!  "From Russia with Love" is generously superfatted with Mango Butter and cold-pressed Castor Bean Oil to moisturize and condition.

It's colored with Blue Clay from Russia (said to be the most therapeutic of all the clays) to add detox/revitalizing properties to this natural soap which I've designed to be for the face, but should prove to be a spa-like body bar as well!  Hubby is anxious to try this one -declaring "That one smells REALLY good" as I was making it.  (Got to love a big, handsome Guinea Pig, yes? :) )

I have the GREATEST great-nephews!

I really do.  But then I have some pretty awesome nieces & nephews, too -stands to reason their kids are cool.  But I digress ...

Last Tuesday my niece and my sister-in-law came to my came to my house, along with my three great-nephews and great-niece ...to see "Aunt B" make soap.

The oldest two are home-schooled & currently learning about chemistry, and are now pretty well-versed in the art and science of soap-making. -yay!  They listened attentively and chose colors and essential oils for fragrance.

My eldest great nephew ...whom I've nicknamed "Schroeder" (a fabulous pianist at the tender age of 9 1/2) chose Eucalyptus essential oil + chlorophyll as his colorant.

"Schroeder's" Soap

"James Bond's" Soap
My second-eldest nephew  whom I shall refer to as "James Bond" (the real-life orinthologist, not the fictional spy) chose 5xOrange as his essential oil and Moroccan Red Clay as his colorant.

After much talk of saponification (they LOVED that word), acids, bases, safety, ingredients, etc.  We got busy, combined their choices into two soap "logs" but and topped them as each preferred.  James chose a smooth top, Schroeder loved the peaks -but alas, that soap would not peak!

I wrapped the bars to insulate & harden ...and have now (after vacation) removed them from their molds and cut them into bars.  Nice work, boys!

I hope we'll make soap together again -perhaps as an annual thing.  There's so much chemistry involved behind the scenes that I personally don't give a thought to from day to day.  Not to mention marketing -packaging, photography, blogging, website maintenance blah blah blah.  Perhaps Aunt B still has a few "lessons" up here sleeve! :D

p.s.  The flower stamp is one I made (with the help of Hubby, of course)  I thought I saved the link, but now I can't find it.  If anyone is interested, I'll take photos of the process next time and post how to do it.  It's really pretty simple and I love the idea of an "original" stamp of my own. :)

To Market? To Market! (But Honey, it's 5:00 in the MORNING!)

While I'm typically annoyingly cheerful in the a.m., I must admit that getting up at 5:00 a.m. for the Old Town Market was a bit difficult ....but boy, am I glad I did!

(You wouldn't guess from the stiff, wooden smile and posture below though, eh?  LOL!  "Frozen" would be how I describe it! )

All joking aside, it was a great day at the market.  I met tons of nice folks, hopefully helped a few with some all-natural soap, and I think perhaps I sweat off a couple of pounds in the process!  After all, it is July in St. Louis -one must expect to perspire. : )

I suppose I should explain my renewed heat-sensitivity:  we just returned from vacationing in Wisconson for a week -lovely Wisconsin, where July evenings often require a sweatshirt -ahhhhh!  So coming back to the heat and humidity takes some adjustment.

But I digress... Back to the market - Check out my Hubby's innovative (and very effective) marketing idea pictured below:

Yes, we allowed/helped folks to TRY a sample bar of Heirloom Soap (and then keep the sample) so they could actually feel the difference of our soap firsthand. It was quite a success, and we'll be making it a permanent part of our booth!

We'll be tweaking a few things, of course -but overall, things worked well & people bought soap ...not bad for our first day.

The other vendors were so nice and fun to chat with.  We were next to a sweet German lady and her lovely daughter who sold their fresh-baked pastries and muffins (yumm!)

There was also a bicycle rodeo, kid's cooking class, cotton candy lady, handmade/handpainted birdhouses, and produce -oh the produce!  We'll be eating fresh green beans and eggplant in the next 24 hours for sure. :)

If you're ever in the Belleville area on a Saturday a.m. you may want to stop in and see all the great stuff. It's from 7:30-Noon at the corner of W. Main and 1st St.

Hope to see you there!

To Market, to Market tra-la la-la-la!

Heirloom Natural Soap will be available for the good folks of Belleville, IL (a.k.a. Main from 7:30-Noon.  (weather permitting, of course -soap and water just don't mix ...outside the shower, that is!)

Looking forward to trying out my brand spankin' new tent, meeting some folks, and TALKING SOAP!  Lots of fun!  Sounds like it's going to be a "family affair" = twice the fun for me to have "my guys" with me!

Please come on out if you're in the area, say "Howdy" and take advantage of some special deals/pricing and save shipping costs to boot!  We look forward to seeing you there! :D

"Honey, Scratch My Back" -All Natural Soap

Oh this is my kinda soap!  E-X-F-O-L-I-A-T-I-O-N in a bar, plus plenty of  moisturizing mango & aloe butters to leave skin soft and smooth.

The natural essential oil blend reminds me of Grey Flannel (yeah, I did that on purpose -mmmmm!)  I'm using a bar right now that's not fully hardened, but I couldn't wait any longer to try it.  Should be in my Online Store around July 10th.  As always, it's a Limited Edition -only 13 bars left now, so feel free to email me to reserve one! :)  becky@heirloomsoapworks.com

"Aubergine Almondine"

"Aubergine Almondine" -well it sounds better than "Purple & Almond" doesn't it? LOL!

I love the rich cherry-almond scent of this natural soap -it reminds me of the old "Jergens" original lotion a bit -only on steroids.

This is the "anti-almond" essential oil blend that my sweet pal Amy Warden over at Great Cakes Soapworks wrote about some time ago.

Since pure bitter almond EO rather freaks me out, I decided to give this natural essential oil blend a try. BINGO!

I think my customers are going to snatch this one up, -seems like there are lots of almond lovers out there.  As always, this is a Limited Edition Soap
-16 bars (minus a couple for yours truly) and it's gone!

If you would like to reserve a bar for yourself or an almond-lover that you hold dear, please let me know at becky@heirloomnaturalsoap.com

Happy Soapin' Everyone!  ~Becky

"Pooh Bar" - Shampoo Bar with Honey...and beer ...and goats milk ...and

"Pooh Bar" Shampoo ...it's That Sort of a Bar!

It's finally here -after my "BubbleHead" natural shampoo bar remained a bit soft, it took me a while to try the "beer thang" again, but this time it worked!  Thanks to my pal Cocobong, S.E. (soaper extrordinaire), for the boiling-off-the-alcohol advice!  Worked like a charm (I also didn't let my lye-water solution sit uncovered for 5 days -I think that helped the bar hadness tremendously! -LOL)

I can't wait to see how this shampoo bar works.  I started with Cocobong's recommended proportions of olive & coconut oils plus some castor, jojoba & flax.  Liquid is beer, goats milk & water.  I've also added a proprietary blend of a few other all-natural "hair nutrients" -EOs and extracts.

I'll be hitting up my Friends and Relations for "testers" in the next few weeks.
Hopefully it will turn out to be a Very Successful Product. ;)  I think Pooh would be thrilled with a Honey Shampoo named in honor of himself ...he's That Sort of Bear!

Neroli-Chamomile ...or "Orange Blossom Special" Soap

"Orange Blossom Special" by Heirloom Soapworks
I am having such a blast with natural soap these days: the coloring, the swirling, the glopping (my personal favorite technique -so stress-free) the fragrancing...the liberating freedom of declaring all of my soaps "Limited Editions" -Aaaaaahhh!  Soaping is fun again!  :)

This latest natural soap has freight-trained it's way to the top of my personal favorites list -literally overnight.

It's an in-your-face-feminine fragrance that reminds me vaguely of the old Coppertone Suntan Lotion (in the brown bottle) which is one of my favorite scents of all time.  (I will definitely be doing a lotion to match this one!)

Made with essential oils and all-natural colorants.  I will be reserving bars for those who want them -just contact me at becky@heirloomnaturalsoap.com there are only 16 bars (minus a few for me) so get 'em while you can! :)

My Problem with "Pretty Soaps"....

Because I've been on a "pretty soap" kick again lately, I'll be packaging some of the prettier varieties with plain cigar-band style wrappers to show them off.  Waddya' think?  Yes, yes, I  know...."she's at it again", but I just can't bear to stick them in a bag and cover 'em up!

I wish they made bags out of the smell-through shrink wrap, as they will need to go into something clear so they don't get all "funky" from people handling them!  Any ideas on that one, my soaping friends?
